The role of Te Pane Matua Taiao; Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) is to protect our environment while meeting the cultural, social and economic needs of our communities. They’re specifically responsible for the region’s natural environment; including flood protection, biosecurity, provision of regional parks, public transport planning and funding, and partnering for climate change resilience.
Within the council, Te Hunga Whiriwhiri embrace their privileged role upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the values of the partnership between GWRC and mana whenua in the region. They provide support and advice on governance relationships, strategic and operational leadership, policy and planning which unlocks the potential of Māori communities, effective communication and engagement with Māori and leadership on te reo, tikanga and mātauranga Māori.
