About Te Kura
Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is New Zealand’s largest state-funded school, delivering online and flexible learning to ākonga from early childhood through to NCEA Level 3 – including young adults and adult learners. With a roll of up to 24,000 learners, and kaimahi (staff) across the motu, our kaupapa is grounded in equity, whānau engagement, and empowering ākonga to reach their potential.

About the Role:
As Project Accountant, you’ll be central to ensuring the financial integrity and compliance of Te Kura’s curriculum-related resource development projects. You'll work closely with our finance and project teams to provide accurate analysis, process financial transactions, and improve reporting systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and Te Kura policies
- Prepare payroll journals, monthly reconciliations, and capitalisation journals
- Support project leads with financial insight and variance reporting
- Collaborate with HR, project managers, and finance teams
- Assist in audits and maintain efficient financial records
- Help kaimahi understand financial processes and contribute to system improvements
- Uphold and promote cultural responsiveness in financial practices
What You’ll Bring:
Essential:
- A tertiary qualification in finance, accounting, or a related field
- Membership with a recognised professional accounting body (e.g., CA ANZ, CPA Australia)
- Strong analytical and Excel skills, with keen attention to detail
- Clear and confident communication skills – especially with non-financial audiences
- Understanding of Te Ao Māori and commitment to cultural responsiveness
Preferred:
- 2–3 years’ financial accounting experience (ideally in audit, NZ public sector, or a Crown entity)
- Familiarity with accounting standards including IPSAS 31
