Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is New Zealand’s largest state school, with up to 24,000 ākonga (students) across the motu at any time. We deliver personalised, online learning programmes from early childhood to NCEA Level 3—serving young people, adults, and whānau through an innovative and inclusive approach to education.
Our ākonga are at the heart of all we do.
We’re now seeking a Financial Accountant who is ready to step up, add value, and deliver beyond expectations—someone who’s detail-focused, improvement-driven, and excited about the opportunity to lead.
About the Role:
This isn’t just about keeping the numbers straight—it’s about raising the bar.
As a key part of Te Kura’s finance team, you’ll ensure the integrity of our financial information and systems while helping the organisation make confident, data-informed decisions. You’ll oversee monthly reporting, manage asset registers and stocktakes, and play a vital role in audit and compliance activities.
And—importantly—you’ll also lead a small team of three direct reports, gaining valuable leadership experience while being mentored and supported by an experienced Financial Accounting Lead. This is a rare opportunity to develop your management skills in a purpose-driven environment where growth is encouraged and your contribution truly matters.
You’ll also help shape and improve systems, documentation and training as part of our commitment to continuous improvement and best practice.
What We’re Looking For:
We need more than technical expertise—we want a financial professional who brings energy, initiative, and a mindset focused on outcomes.
You’ll bring:
- A tertiary qualification in finance, accounting, or a related field
- CA or CPA membership (or working towards it)
- 2–3 years’ experience in financial accounting (ideally in the public or education sector)
- A detail-oriented approach with strong understanding of controls, compliance and NZ accounting standards
- Advanced Excel and good systems knowledge (Business Central a bonus)
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to support non-financial stakeholders
- A commitment to cultural responsiveness and working in a way that upholds the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Why Te Kura?
At Te Kura, you’ll do meaningful work that supports learners across Aotearoa. You’ll join a supportive and collaborative finance team that values innovation, transparency and teamwork.
We offer:
- A role where your work makes a real difference
- Leadership experience with room to grow
- Support from experienced mentors
- Opportunities to improve systems, improve quality of financial information and drive process change
- A flexible workplace
