My name is David Hammond, and I’m the Executive Search Lead at Tribe.

What I’m looking for from high-performing leadership is what I call the seven skills of a high-performing leader. These seven are:

  1. Political acumen: the ability to relate to a board and work with the board positively.

  2. Dealing with complexity: handling many things coming at them from different angles.

  3. Strategic thinking: having the ability to prioritize strategically and to “helicopter” up and down within the organization.

  4. Execution and delivery: achieving solid results that can be demonstrated clearly on a CV.

  5. Emotional intelligence (EQ): the ability to relate to staff, customers, and clients, and to truly understand things from other people’s perspectives.

  6. Communication: the ability to communicate to any audience in a way that is clear and easily understood.

  7. Building partnerships: the ability to bring together meaningful, win-win partnerships that deliver value both to the leader and to those they are working with.
