Economic Analyst | Part-Time | Wellington
Bring the numbers to life. Turn economic insight into influence.
We’re looking for an Economic Analyst with energy, curiosity and a genuine interest in people and business, someone who doesn't just understand the data, but wants to get out there and explain what it means.
This is a unique opportunity to join a growing organisation representing businesses across Central New Zealand, providing the economic insight and evidence that informs advocacy, government engagement and business decision-making.
We're looking for someone who...
- Wants to be here — you're enthusiastic, engaged and bring positive energy to the role.
- Has a curious mind — you naturally want to understand the why behind the numbers and what the data is really telling you.
- Is social and engaging — you're comfortable building relationships, talking to people and getting out from behind the desk.
- Brings strong economic skills — you understand economics, data and the facts behind the analysis.
- Can tell the story behind the numbers — you're able to take complex information and make it clear, relevant and compelling.
- Can present with confidence — whether that's to business leaders, councils, government stakeholders or other decision-makers.
- Is commercially aware — you're interested in how economic conditions actually affect businesses, sectors and regions.
The role
You'll produce high-quality, evidence-based economic analysis that gives credibility to advocacy positions and provides businesses with a clear view of what's happening across their regions.
You'll:
- Analyse business intelligence, regional indicators, Statistics NZ and Treasury data.
- Assess the economic impact of policy and regulatory changes.
- Build and maintain regional economic profiles.
- Monitor economic indicators, trends and emerging signals.
- Produce regular economic intelligence and insights for senior leadership.
- Develop regional economic briefing material.
- Provide analysis, charts and data for submissions, communications and digital content.
- Support Board and executive discussions with relevant economic context.
- Work closely with policy and advocacy specialists.
- Ensure analysis is accurate, transparent and backed by robust evidence.
The important part — getting your insight out there
This isn't a role where your analysis disappears into a report.
Over time, you'll have the opportunity to present economic insights directly to business audiences, councils and government stakeholders, as well as contribute to webinars, podcasts, video content and potentially media commentary.
You don't need to already be a polished media commentator or presenter.
What matters is that you're curious, personable, confident and genuinely interested in engaging with people. We'll support you to build the public-facing side of the role.
What you'll bring
We're looking for:
- Proven experience in economic analysis and interpreting data.
- Strong understanding of New Zealand economic data, including Statistics NZ and Treasury.
- The ability to understand the facts and evidence behind the numbers and identify what really matters.
- Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills.
- The ability to translate complex information into clear, accessible insights.
- Strong written communication and data visualisation capability.
- Confidence engaging with a range of stakeholders.
- A willingness and ability to present information to business leaders, councils and government audiences.
- A positive attitude, strong energy and genuine enthusiasm for the work.
- A naturally curious and collaborative approach.
A tertiary qualification in economics, statistics, data analytics or another quantitative discipline is preferred, although equivalent professional experience will be considered.
What's on offer?
- Genuine part-time opportunity — designed as a specialist role, not a full-time job squeezed into fewer hours.
- Real influence — your work will directly contribute to advocacy and government/business engagement.
- A visible role — an opportunity to build your profile and become a recognised voice on regional economic issues.
- Variety — analysis, stakeholder engagement, presenting, content and regional insight.
- Regional exposure — develop a genuine understanding of the economies and businesses across five regions.
- Supportive leadership — work alongside experienced senior stakeholders who will help you grow.
- A role where your personality matters — we're looking for someone who brings energy, curiosity and a desire to make an impact.
The Opportunity
If you're an economist or economic analyst who loves the data but also loves people, this could be an excellent opportunity to do something different.
We're looking for someone who wants to understand the numbers, challenge the thinking, explain the story and get in front of people to make it matter.
