Sales, Marketing & Digital: FMCG Update August 2026

Josh Pidduck

Tribe Recruit's FMCG specialist Josh Pidduck breaks down current hiring trends across New Zealand's FMCG sector, including salary benchmarks, skills in demand, and talent availability at the mid-level.

Consumer spending caution is still setting the tone for FMCG recruitment in New Zealand. Tribe Recruit's FMCG specialist, Josh Pidduck, shares what he's seeing on the ground, from the skills employers are prioritising to the salary bands where talent is hardest to find.

Hiring is improving, but selectivity remains high

Cautious consumer spending has continued to influence FMCG recruitment across New Zealand, creating an environment where businesses remain focused on productivity, commercial outcomes, and demonstrating clear return on investment from new hires.

While hiring activity has improved compared to previous years, the market remains selective. There are still attractive opportunities available, but recruitment processes are often more thorough, with hiring managers placing greater emphasis on proven commercial impact and cultural fit.

What hiring managers are looking for

Today's hiring managers want clear evidence of how candidates are adding value in their current role. This may include:

  • Driving ranging and distribution outcomes

  • Improving GP margins

  • Increasing revenue or volume growth

  • Delivering successful sales and marketing initiatives that create measurable commercial results

Strong analytical capability and the ability to translate insights into action remain highly sought-after skills.

Mid-level talent remains tight

At the mid-level salary range of approximately $80,000 to $150,000, talent availability remains relatively tight. Many experienced FMCG professionals continue to pursue opportunities overseas, particularly in Australia and the UK, reducing the depth of local talent pools. While strong candidates are available, attracting and securing them can be challenging.

Salary isn't the only driver

Salary remains an important factor for candidates considering a move. However, opportunities to broaden skill sets, expand commercial exposure, and accelerate career development are equally important drivers in the current market.
