Unemployment hits 5.6%. Here's what the headline doesn't tell you

Bruce Pilbrow

Unemployment has climbed to 5.6%, the highest rate in over a decade. But for employers, a deeper candidate pool and steady job growth tell a more useful story than the headline number. Tribe Group CEO Bruce Pilbrow breaks down what it actually means for your hiring plans.

As we read through Stats NZ's June 2026 labour market statistics, it’s clear the unemployment rate climbing to 5.6%, up from 5.3% in the March quarter, and above bank economist forecasts of 5.4% to 5.5%, is significant. It's the highest unemployment rate New Zealand has recorded in more than a decade, and extends the run of increases through the second half of 2025 and into 2026.

Headlines like this tend to land as bad news, and for a lot of people looking for work, it is a tougher market. But if you're an employer, the story underneath the number is more interesting, and more useful, than the headline lets on.

"A number like 5.6% tells you the market's harder, but not why. Filled jobs actually rose 0.5% year on year, and we’re seeing that at Tribe. Population growth has simply outpaced the rate of hiring," says Bruce Pilbrow, Tribe Group CEO.

The overall effect is a deeper, more competitive candidate pool, alongside continued growth in the contract and temporary markets as employers look for flexibility without long-term commitment.

Wage expectations are also easing on both sides, which tends to speed up negotiations rather than stall them. And a wider pool of qualified candidates means companies can have their pick of talent, if they’re willing to trawl through the applications.

"At Tribe Group our job is to make sure that in a deeper candidate pool, our clients still get the best person for the role, and our candidates still get treated with the respect they deserve, no matter which way the market's moving. That's the bit that doesn't change, and it's at the core of what Tribe Group does," continues Pilbrow.

This is the market where the gap between hiring well and hiring fast shows up, and it's where external resources add real value. Building a genuinely deep, competitive candidate pool that's tailored to the role and the company, without dropping the ball on candidate experience, takes more than a job ad and a bigger pile of applications. It's a different skill, and it's one that pays off for both sides of the hiring table.

Whether you're looking to optimise your hiring process or wondering how to navigate the current climate, having the right people in your corner makes all the difference.
