The function of the board in an organisation is really to be the overseer of strategy. In my view, the board needs to be looking three to five years out and asking the hard questions - of both the staff and the board itself - about whether it has the right strategy and the right people, and governance, to get where it needs to be.

I work with a number of organisations that are on their growth curve, wondering how to expand beyond New Zealand. A lot of the answer lies in the type of people they choose to bring onto the board. That often means external members who have the right skill sets to take them to the next level.

It’s my role to work alongside the board on those complex decisions that move them from A to B. Many of those decisions involve people, processes, policies, and structures. But you know what? We can make that really simple and help them get on the journey they need to be on - and ultimately reach their destination.
