About the Role
We’re looking for a Chartered Accountant to lead our small, hands-on Finance function.
Reporting to the Assistant City Missioner – Corporate Services, you’ll lead a team of two and take responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of Finance across the Mission.
This is an operational, hands-on finance leadership role. You’ll need to be comfortable getting into the detail, preparing a full set of accounts, understanding NZ tax and statutory requirements, supporting budgets and forecasts, and coordinating the annual audit.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Lead and support a Finance team of two

  • Prepare monthly reporting and a full set of financial accounts

  • Support budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis

  • Coordinate the annual audit and work with external auditors

  • Ensure compliance with NZ accounting standards, tax and statutory requirements

  • Oversee payroll, AP, AR, reconciliations and month-end

  • Provide practical financial advice to managers and budget holders

  • Strengthen financial controls, processes and systems

  • Support continuous improvement across the Finance function

What You’ll Bring

  • CA ANZ qualification (or equivalent) – essential

  • Strong NZ tax and accounting knowledge

  • Proven ability to prepare a full set of financial accounts

  • Financial reporting and management accounting experience

  • Budgeting and forecasting experience

  • A sound understanding of the annual audit process

  • Strong Excel and financial systems capability

  • Experience leading, supervising or coordinating a small team

  • A hands-on, practical approach and strong attention to detail

  • The ability to build trusted relationships across an organisation

Not-for-profit experience would be useful, but it’s not essential. Technical accounting capability, NZ tax knowledge and the ability to roll up your sleeves are.

Why Wellington City Mission?

  • This is an opportunity to use your finance skills in an organisation where the work has a genuine purpose.

  • The Mission is a place of hope and belonging. We treat everyone with dignity and respect, embrace people as they are, and make decisions with courageous wisdom.
