Software Engineer

Apply
Ko wai te Pakihi nei | About the Organisation
Sharesies is a growing New Zealand tech company with a clear mission to provide financial empowerment for everyone. As part of its next growth phase, Sharesies is investing further into its in-house engineering team. Rather than outsourcing critical work, Sharesies is investing in building, owning, and scaling the core systems that sit at the heart of the business.

The culture is ambitious but grounded. Engineers are encouraged to challenge the status quo, be curious, understand the why, and focus on delivering value. The structure is relatively flat, progression is based on capability rather than tenure, and there’s a strong belief in balancing healthy pressure with genuine care for people. They’re proud of the culture they’ve created and have been recently recognised as one of the best places to work in New Zealand.

Ko te āhua o te tūranga | About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Software Developer to join a product engineering team building and evolving a modern platform (within Sharesies Personal) that supports Sharesies’ investing products. This team manages Sharesies Investing products, including the original Investing product, tax, corporate actions and crypto (among plenty of other things). The team sits within the same business unit as Spend, Protect and Save, so it’s a busy, high-impact environment. This is a technically interesting product environment. At its core, the platform acts as a trusted system of record for legally and financially significant data. Accuracy, security, auditability and reliability are fundamental to how the software is designed and built.

As a Senior Software Developer, you’ll work as part of a cross-functional product team to design, build and improve the services, APIs, workflows and user experiences that underpin the platform. Everyone writes code. Python is the primary language, but prior Python experience is
not essential if you’ve demonstrated the ability to learn new technologies quickly. Experience across more than one language (for example Python, C#, TypeScript/JavaScript) is valued more than deep specialisation in a single stack. The environment is predominantly Python and C# on AWS; however, Sharesies is technology agnostic. What matters most is strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn quickly.

What You’ll Be Working On
● You’ll contribute across the lifecycle of the product, including:
● Designing and developing scalable backend services and APIs
● Building functionality that supports complex transactional workflows and high-integrity data
● Developing secure and reliable handling of sensitive customer and financial data
● Designing systems where transaction history, traceability and auditability are critical
● Building integrations with internal and external platforms and (where relevant) regulatory services
● Improving platform performance, resilience, observability and scalability
● Contributing to the ongoing evolution of the architecture as the product grows
● Working closely with Product, Design, Engineering and other stakeholders to turn complex requirements into well-designed software

Mōu | About You
We’re looking for a strong senior engineer who is comfortable solving complex problems rather than simply implementing predefined requirements.
You’ll ideally bring:
● Strong commercial software development experience, including operating at Senior Developer / Senior Software Engineer level
● Strong backend engineering capability and experience building production-grade applications
● Experience designing and developing APIs, services and integrations
● Strong understanding of relational data modelling and transactional systems
● Experience designing systems where data integrity and consistency are important
● Good knowledge of modern cloud architecture and engineering practices
● Experience with automated testing, CI/CD and modern software delivery
● A strong understanding of application security and secure development practices
● Experience diagnosing production issues and improving application reliability and performance
● The ability to work effectively within a cross-functional product team
● Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs clearly
● Nice to have (but not essential): PostgreSQL, Terraform, Docker, AWS services (EC2/ECS/S3/RDS), web application security, and experience in financial or investing systems.

Senior-level expectations
This is a hands-on engineering role, but seniority is more than writing code. You’ll be expected to:
● Take ownership of complex technical problems from discovery through to production
● Contribute to architecture and technical design decisions
● Identify risks around data integrity, security, scalability and maintainability
● Make pragmatic engineering decisions and clearly articulate the trade-offs involved
● Review code and help maintain a high engineering standard across the team
● Mentor and support other developers
● Collaborate with Product to shape solutions rather than simply receive requirements
● Help break complex domain problems into sensible, deliverable increments
● Improve engineering practices and contribute positively to the wider engineering culture

Tauwāhi | Location & Flexibility
Wellington is preferred. Auckland-based candidates and flexible working arrangements are considered. New starters are expected to spend time in Wellington initially to become well embedded in the team and culture. Sharesies offers a flexible working environment, but they also have a genuine office culture, so being present and building strong relationships in-person is important.

Salary & Benefits
KiwiSaver contributions
Employee Share Options (ESOP) currently 15% of salary for all permanent staff
This is a genuine differentiator. It is additional and not included in the base salary.
Benefits:
● Equity participation (ESOP)
● Life, income protection and trauma insurance
● Flexible/hybrid working plus remote, mobile and internet allowances
● Extra leave, including wellness days and enhanced parental leave
● Learning and development budget
● Wellbeing support, including mental health, career and financial coaching

Diversity & Inclusion
Through Tribe Tech and Tau Mai, we’re committed to building engineering teams that reflect the diversity of our communities. We strongly encourage applications from women, people from ethnic minority backgrounds, and others who are under-represented in technology. If you’re excited by the role but don’t meet every requirement, we’d still love to hear from you.
